About the WebinarIn this webinar training, survivor advocates and others will learn the basics of federal and MA affordable housing programs and how survivors can access these programs. Additionally, the webinar will highlight common scenarios that arise for domestic violence survivors accessing and maintaining safe housing, and how advocates can assist their clients in getting remedies from landlords. Common issues that occur for survivors include requesting early lease terminations, lock changes, emergency transfers, lease bifurcations, and facing admissions obstacles and evictions because of the violence committed against them.

About the Presenter:

Karlo Ng, Supervising Attorney, National Housing Law Project: Karlo focuses on housing issues impacting survivors of domestic and sexual violence and trafficking; fair housing and civil rights, with a focus on the special needs and housing issues of immigrants and people with limited English proficiency. Before joining NHLP, Karlo was an attorney at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington, D.C.  Karlo received her law degree from Northeastern University School of Law.

Barbara Zimbel, Senior Attorney, Greater Boston Legal Services: Barbara has worked at Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) for over 30 years where she is currently a Senior Housing Attorney and before that spent five years practicing housing law at Merrimack Valley Legal Services. She is in charge of the housing work for domestic violence survivors at GBLS, defending individual women in evictions and also working to provide survivors access to all the housing resources to which they are entitled. Barbara works with women’s advocacy groups and battered women’s groups throughout the state advocating for legislative and regulatory changes necessary to protect women’s housing rights. Barbara has given numerous housing/domestic violence trainings for battered women’s groups as well as state and local agencies. Barbara graduated from Boston University School of Law cum laude in 1981.
